CORE Outreach Award

The annual CORE Outreach Award serves to publicly recognize the efforts and achievements of UCSC graduate students that actively engage a broader audience through marine science communication.

“Outreach” activities include any activity that communicates marine science knowledge to an audience that would not otherwise be exposed.

Examples include: volunteering at the National Marine Fisheries Service's Frist Friday event, presenting at Science on Tap, blogging, publishing in a local paper, teaching demo at a local school, creating an online video message, etc.

Winner of the 1st annual Outreach Award will receive: 1) $100, 2) their photo and a description of their outreach achievements on CORE and OS department website, and 3) recognition at the annual OS department spring pizza party alongside other OS student awardees

In order to be eligible for this award the applicant must be a CORE member (signed up on the CORE website).

Preference will go to students that have attended at least 1 CORE meeting.

Outreach activities must have been conducted between the commencement of Fall 2017 – end of Spring 2019

TA responsibilities will not be considered as “outreach”

Applications will be evaluated based on: Leadership role in activity, creativity and originality, extent/duration/audience size, and broader impacts (specifically, extent to which activity improved diversity, equity, and inclusion in the marine sciences).

Applications are due May 15th, 2019

The application should include: name, year/department (all departments encouraged to apply), one-paragraph description per outreach activity (please include any information pertinent to the evaluation criteria), and supporting documentation (e.g. blog link, talk announcement, supervisor letter, etc).

2016-2017 CORE Outreach Award Recipient
Stephan Bitterwolf

Stephan is a PhD student

in the Ocean Sciences Department at the University of California Santa Cruz and is an active member of CORE( Communicating Oceanography Research Effectively). He was granted the 2016-2017 CORE Outreach Award, sponsored by the Ocean Sciences Department, for his outstanding outreach achievements and dedication to science communication. Stephan has worked hard to engage broad and diverse audiences in the marine sciences through activities including: teaching middle school girls about concepts in

Mobirise

oceanography through the Expanding Your Horizons program, volunteering as a resident phycologist for the Moss Landing Marine Lab’s Open House that saw over 2,000 visitors, serving as a science mentor for a community college student who has since been admitted to UCSC, speaking at local middle schools about his journey becoming a scientist and how others can work toward a career in marine science, blogging for CORE about his experiences communicating science, and interviewing for a high school documentary on ocean plastics.

We thank and applaud Stephan for his dedication to science communication and outreach and hope his story inspires others to step out of the workplace and talk about science!.
